The best thing about Christmas?

FOOD :-)

Tonight my mother made a roast, so I made a side dish.

I came across this recipe for a savory bread pudding a few weeks back on when I was looking for something to take to a Holiday Party Pot Luck but it just wasn't right for the occasion. Tonight however seemed perfect for this Blue Cheese Bread Pudding:


  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 20 ounces cubed French bread
  • 1 pound blue cheese, crumbled
  • 5 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper


  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-low heat, and cook the onion and garlic 20 minutes, until soft and golden brown.
  2. Arrange 1/2 the bread cubes in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan. Layer with 1/2 the blue cheese and the onion mixture. Top with remaining bread cubes and cheese.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg yolks, heavy cream, salt and pepper. Pour over top layer of bread cubes in pan. Set aside for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  5. Bake pudding 40 minutes in the preheated oven. Cover pan and continue baking 15 minutes, or until set and golden brown. Allow to sit 15 minutes before serving.

It sure is not the healthiest side dish, but it is DELICIOUS! I made the recipe exactly as called for but the cheese was too heavy. Blue cheese is one of my favorites, but even a lover of this cheese can have too much! I suggest using 1/2 the amount of blue cheese called for (a gorgonzola works nicely).

Then it was off to preparing Christmas Morning Breakfast. Every couple of years my mother brings out the family sticky bunt cake recipe to cook up for special mornings. It has to be prepared the night before so while I was shopping at the grocery store earlier today I called my mom up and suggested we make it for tomorrow, because it's time I learn how it's made!

Surprisingly enough, the recipe had a secret ingredient I NEVER would have guessed! Butterscotch pudding mix :)


About 20 or so frozen dinner rolls (Rhodes brand works nicely).

3/4 cup brown sugar.

1 tablespoon cinnamon.

1 stick of butter.

1 Package Butterscotch pudding (stovetop, not instant).


The night before baking, chop pecans and place at the bottom of a buttered bunt cake pan.

In a sauce pan place pudding mix (without the other ingredients listed on the box) and 1 stick of butter. Melt together on low heat. Add brown sugar and cinnamon.

Place frozen rolls on top of the chopped pecans and poor butterscotch mixture over frozen rolls. Let sit in a warm place overnight so the frozen dough will rise. Bake at 350 the next morning for 30 minutes.

The Three Goats Update

I stopped into Three Goats Cafe tonight for a latte. The whole decor was different: no comfy chairs around the fireplace, half a wall of art for sale has been replaced by hundreds of boardgames for sale (but none are available to play while drinking your coffee).

I think they've changed management and the new owner has a vision thats less chill and relaxed than the previous owner. There is obviously less concentration on local artists...I'm pretty sure the cafe doesn't even have live music on Friday nights anymore (but let me double check that...).


What a disappointment.

But hey, the espresso is still fantastic.

The Three Goats

Every time I think about going home for the Holidays to Mooresville, NC I cannot think of any reason I will enjoy it. I did not grow there and I have never lived there, but each short visit I have made down to my family's new home hasn't been as awful as I expected. Today I was thinking about reasons Mooresville might be a pleasant change from life in Washington, DC, and I came up with one really good answer to my question: The Three Goats, a local coffee shop next to the Harris Teeter where my mother shops for some of her groceries (the rest she picks up from a local farm, which I've been meaning to get the name of).

The Three Goats cafe is a pleasant surprise in a town home to NASCAR. I just never would have guessed that fine espresso or the coffee shop scene would be able to mix so well into the race car fanatic, Mooresville area. The Three Goats is a great place to enjoy local artists' work, up for sale, and on Friday nights, live performances.

Here's a snapshot from my old phone (RIP) of a piece of art I just couldn't stop myself from staring at last time I visited.

If you ever find yourself in Mooresville, NC, make sure to check this place out for a nice Agave Latte (sweetened with agave nectar) or a nice European Breakfast (a double shot of espresso and a croissant, although as my fiance likes to say, a European Breakfast is a double shot of espresso and a cigaret. To each his own, hey?).

"I mean, like meeting you was kind of like if you looked really close at a painting to see the brush strokes and as you leaned in the person in the painted punched you in the face. I dont think this should sound like a bad thing."

Reality is Reality: Final Film for Film and Video Production One

Here's my group's final film, Reality is Reality, in Film and Video Production One at American Univeristy, with Professor Russell Williams.

The film is a mockumentary/reality tv show film about an amateur student film crew, who follows the story of a student professional actress and her roommate as they get to know a new addition to their suite in the dorms. What happens when the new roommate isn't who she says she is?

The Soapiest

In Film and Video Production One we had to film a soap opera scene that airs on the television in the background of a scene in our final film (a film within a film). Final film to follow in the next few days :)
